King supports minimal changes for second year of transportation budget

20140304_LegWA_4097shThe state Senate last night approved minor adjustments to the state’s 2013-15 transportation budget that will continue maintenance and preservation of Washington roads, bridges and other infrastructure. Sen. Curtis King, co-chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, says the modest changes he supports through Senate Bill 6001 are not about adding spending for new projects but simply continue to fund existing work.

“Because of the hard work we put into the biennial transportation budget last year, there were very few areas that needed adjustment in 2014,” said King, a Yakima Republican who represents the 14th Legislative District. “Supplemental budgets are meant to address unforeseen issues, appropriations that didn’t balance right or issues that are time-sensitive. King sworn into office, named co-chair of Transportation Committee

Senator Curtis KingOn the first day of the 2013 legislative session, Washington State Supreme Court Justice Charles Johnson administered the oath of office to Republican Senator Curtis King, who represents the 14th District, to begin King’s second four-year term. Shortly thereafter, the Senate adopted a committee structure that installed King as the co-chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, along with 30th District Senator Tracey Eide, D-Federal Way.

“I am very pleased and honored to have been selected as co-chair of Transportation,” King said. “The Senate Transportation Committee has a longstanding tradition of bipartisanship and I will work tirelessly to see that this tradition is continued.” Continue reading

Senators King, Honeyford win “Guardian of Small Business” award

Curtis King, R-Yakima, and Jim Honeyford, R-Sunnyside, as recipients of its Guardians of Small Business Award for 2012. The award is given to legislators with strong records of sponsoring and supporting legislation vital to the creation, growth and survival of small-business enterprises in Washington state.

“Small businesses are the driving force behind our economy and when they’re successful, we’re all successful,” said King, who represents the 14th Legislative District. “When this economy finally turns around it won’t happen from the top, down…it’ll start with our local businesses, the backbone of our state’s economic engine. I consider it a real honor to be named a guardian of that ilk.”

“I’m very proud to receive this award from the National Federation of Independent Business once again,” added Honeyford, who represents the 15th Legislative District. “In my 18 years as a state lawmaker I’ve always tried to be a champion of small businesses and have worked hard to give them every opportunity to succeed in this often-difficult environment.”

Deccio ‘a dear friend and colleague,’ says King

Former Washington State Sen. Alex Deccio, who served the 14th Legislative District, passed away Tuesday evening in a Yakima hospital. Deccio’s career of public service included two terms in the House of Representatives, a term as a Yakima County commissioner, service in the Senate between 1981 and 1989, and again from 1993 until his retirement in 2005. Deccio would have been 90 years old on Friday.

King to host 14th District telephone town hall meeting June 21

At 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, many households across the 14th Legislative District will receive a phone call from State Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, with an invitation to participate in a live, interactive telephone town hall meeting. During the hour-long event, participants will learn about the 2011 regular and special legislative sessions and share their thoughts and questions with the senator.

Only those with landlines will receive a phone call, so residents wanting to participate via cell phone or from somewhere other than their home must call toll-free 1-877-229-8493. The access code is 15281. The number will be available about 10 minutes before the town hall begins. Continue reading

14th District lawmakers protect Yakima Valley School from closure

Up to 70 percent of residents living at Yakima Valley School for the developmentally disabled have called it home for 25 to 30 years. With the passage of Senate Bill 5459 today, the Washington State Legislaturewill allow them to remain at the Selah facility for the rest of their lives.

The measure will close the Frances Haddon Morgan developmental disability facility in Bremerton by Dec. 31, but sets in place a plan to gradually reduce the number of residents at YVS. Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, worked to keep the facility’s residents and staff in place for as long as possible. Continue reading

King to host telephone town hall meeting Wednesday

State Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, is inviting residents of the 14th Legislative District to participate in a live community conversation on Wednesday. The telephone town hall meeting regarding the 2011 legislative session will take place from 7 to 8 p.m.

Many district residents can expect an invitational phone call from King a few minutes prior to the teleforum, but those who do not may also participate from the comfort of their own homes by dialing 1-877-229-8493 and entering the code 15281.

Bill to create anti-gang law ready to pass Senate with King’s support

House Bill 2414, which would create a criminal street gang activity nuisance law, was made eligible today by the Senate Rules Committee for a vote by the full Senate. The measure’s chief supporter in the upper chamber of the Legislature, Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, said such a law would give law-abiding citizens another tool to help combat gang activity in their neighborhoods.

“We’ve been fighting the expanding gang presence in our district for some time now, and this bill will make it easier for private individuals to take action,” King said. “We need all the help we can get to combat this scourge and this bill will certainly do that.” Continue reading

King honors Nile Valley Landslide recovery effort participants

Today the Washington State Senate adopted Senate Resolution 8690, sponsored by Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, honoring those whose hard work and dedication assisted in the swift recovery effort following the Nile Valley Landslide on Oct. 11.

“On October 11 the Nile Valley landslide devastated our community, forcing many people out of their homes and completely destroying others,” King said. “I would like to acknowledge all of those whose hard work contributed to the recovery effort.”

King’s resolution honored Gov. Christine Gregoire, Washington State Department of Transportation employees, Yakima County Public Services, and numerous other state and local agencies who aided the recovery effort. Continue reading
